Dr Punit .Gupta
Professor Dr. Gupta is MBBS, MD (Medicine), DM (Nephrology) and PhD. He is the Honorary Nephrologists to the Governor of Chhattisgarh State since 2009. He is Chairman and Members of many important academic and management committees of various Government Medical Institutions in the country and the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Health Sciences University, Raipur and other universities in India.
He has an excellent track record as a Medical Student and had be awarded college Gold Medal in Biochemistry, Gold Medal in E.N.T. , Dr. Shubha Laxmi University Gold Medal in Obstetrics & Gynaecology , Dr. Tulsi Prasad Tiwari University Gold Medal for obtaining first position in Medicine , Dr. Sharvan Dube University Gold Medal for first position in final M.B.B.S. Examination, Certificate of Merit in ENT, Medicine, Obstetrics &Gynaecology, Forensic Medicine, Biochemistry and got Distinctions in many subjects of study. He was awarded prestigious Fellowships by American Society of Nephrology in 2004 and International Society of Peritoneal dialysis in 2005.
As a fellow, he has worked under the World renowned Nephrologists, namely Prof. Raymond Credit (Netherland), Prof. Peter Blake (USA), Prof Oreoplis (Father of CAPD) (CANADA), PROF. Smith (Amterdem), Prof. Georgi Abraham (father of CAPD in India), Prof. P. Soundrarajan (Chennai) and has produced work related to the kidney diseases in tribal population which was much appreciated at the International level.
Recently Prof. Dr. Punit Gupta has been awarded with the gem of all research award i.e. Dr. B. C. Roy National Award in recognition of his research in tribal dominated state , under the category To give Aid or Assistance to Research Project for the year 2016 by honorable president of India.
Dr Gupta have been heading Nephrology in the Pt. J.N.M. Medical College,) and is also the Medical Superintendent cum Academic Incharge of DKS Post Graduate Institute & Research Center,. He was incharge of many Superspecialty training Programme in institution like fellowship, PhD & Technology programmes. He has guided over 100 Postgraduate & Technologist student for their thesis & Project in Nephrology & Research in relation to diabetes and also severed as an examiner for the university examinations.
He took up the special project to diagnose Genetic Kidney Diseases in Tribes and has been successful in diagnosing some rarer to rarest genetic diseases, namely Senior Loken Syndrome, Joubert Syndrome like disorder, Kikuchi Disease, Round Worm in Kidney, Asymmetrical Gangrene of fingers in Malaria kidney disease & a big Calculi in the Teeth in CKD.
He has started the 1st dialysis centre in the Government hospital in tribal area of Chhattisgarh. He has done more than 80000 hemodialysis in tribal dominated Chhattisgarh state and other parts of India till date and one of the few Nephrologists in the country who do bedside CAPD catheter insertion under local anesthesia. He is the only Nephrologist in the country who has done a rare dialysis successfully on a 100-year old Tribal Woman.
A man of researches and publication, he has presented more than 160 research papers and abstracts on Kidney Diseases mainly related to diabetes in Tribal populations at Renowned National and International Conferences. These papers were highly commended by the Nephrologists world over. He was felicitated for being the only research scholar who had presented 29 abstracts in Indian Society of Nephrology conference, Pune and 11 research papers at Asia Pacific congress of Nephrology, 2008 in Malaysia on tribal kidney diseases.
He has delivered a lecture on Tubercular Kidney Disease among Tribal Population in Seventh Renal Prevention of Kidney Disease 2008, Toronto (Canada) from a landline in India (as he could not go to Canada) which was broadcast to more than 200 participants and he was awarded for the Best Lecture in the conference.
Dr. Gupta have received merit Scholarship in year 1995-96 & 1996-97 . His Oral Paper was awarded first prize in ISNCON 2007, New Delhi. He was awarded internationally prestigious APCN Developmental awards in Malaysia 2008 and a Follow Scholarship by International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis in Turkey 2008. His paper was recognized as a best Paper in API 2014, Bhilai. He was awarded Certificate of Excellence awards by the Times of India groups 2016. His work was appreciated with certificate of appreciation by Indian Dietician association 2016. He was felicitated by Agrasen Agrawal Samaj for his excellent work in Tribal Population 2016. He was honored with excellence award by ‘Z’ TV Chhattisgarh for this distinguish work in kidney disease in rural population of Chhattisgarh in 2017.
His most notable contribution is in the field of research in Nephrology and diabetes
He has developed a concept of Teledialysis, first of its kind in Asia, to help and save lives of many patients on Dialysis related complications in remote and Tribal areas. More than 100 patients’ life in saved in one year because of teledialysis concept. This concept of teledialysis is very good for remote and rural areas as there is paucity of Nephrology in India.
He has developed Portable dialysis Machine (MAKE-D) for 60 billion kidney patients in world who require dialysis many times in a week specially in diabetes patients . The portable device was highly appreciated at the International Conferences Nephrology 2015 Baltimore (USA) as the research was conducted in tribal area. This portable machine runs without use of electricity with less man power and less pure water. Hemodialysis can be done on patients by this portable device while they do daily routine work. This Research related to Dialysis machine was appreciated by the members of Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha and they commended the work in the interest of tribal. His portable dialysis machine received patent number in India and hopefully this dialysis machine will come in commercial market soon. The Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, has approached Dr. Punit Gupta for license to make the Dialysis machine
He has developed an abdominal Pressure Measurement Scale, which is very useful of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Patients (type of dialysis) specialy in diabetic patients. This device helps know the abdominal Pressure in CAPD patients and avoid complications during the CAPD exchange. This machine is also under the process of patent in India.
He has developed and economic, efficient and effective walkie talkie system for consultation and directions to the hospital staff and doctors who face problems particularly during any dialysis and medical emergencies due to tele signal problem. This concept is being implemented in tribal and remote area of Chhattisgarh. This system of communication has helped many critical patients in hospital.
He has developed and introduced graduate and postgraduate level quality courses for graduate and post graduate studies in Dialysis Technology in tribal State of Chhattisgarh. The students undergoing these courses will add to the present staff in the hospitals thereby improving the quality of nephrology and diabetic services in the tribal state.
He is a very simple and self-effacing person with deep empathy for the under privileged people and very strong social commitment. He has been active in spreading awareness about kidney diseases, particularly among the tribal’s and rural people by organizing camps and in the urban areas through print and electronic media on a regular basis. He is also innovating and discovering new devices. His contribution to the expansion of horizons of knowledge in the field of Nephrology and diabetes has been of outstanding merits.
